all literary submissions must be previously unpublished.

fiction and creative non-fiction

  • double-spaced, times new roman, 12 point font.
  • submissions should be no longer than 4,000 words (but we love anything shorter, too).
  • please limit yourself to 2 stories per submission unless you are submitting flash fiction (100-500 words). in which case, you may submit more but still keep the total under 4,000 words please and thanks.

poetry

  • times new roman, 12 point font.
  • 1-5 poems, no more than 10 pages.
visual art guidelines

please only submit up to 10 pieces of visual art at a time!

visual art

  • 300dpi

comics

  • our pages are 6.5″x8″ and comic spreads can be up to two pages. That being said, feel free to submit less than a full spread, along with single or multiple strips.
  • 300dpi
non-fiction pitches

this is for traditional non-fiction (literary criticism, philosophical essays, gonzo journalism, reviews, and interviews), for creative non-fiction see literary guidelines.

pitch

  • all pitches must be sent to toothcutjournal@gmail.com, along with 1-2 writing samples, your name, a short (~50 word) bio, and where in the world you are located. title your email as follows: “Pitch-[Last Name]”
  • we are looking for pitches of literary criticism, philosophical essays, gonzo journalism, reviews, and interviews to be published in toothcut journal no. 2.
  • pitch 2-5 ideas at a time.
  • feel free to push the boundaries and be experimental in your work (meaning we are open to hybrid forms of work, including but not limited to: comics, menus, annotated photography, itineraries, choose-your-own-adventures, and whatever else).

literary criticism and philosophical essays

  • nothing too jargony and inaccessible. although we love work that engages with theory in a complex manner, we are looking for work that can be understood by people outside of your field.
  • that being said, do not feel that you need to dumb down your ideas or work.
  • we prefer but are not limited to things that are local (Atlantic Canada) and contemporary.

gonzo journalism, reviews, and interviews

  • we are not looking for pieces that are strictly journalistic (we want pieces that are works of art in their own right).
  • for reviews: your opinion of the piece should be clear, but please, no star-ratings or any equivalent quantitative metrics.
  • we prefer but are not limited to things that are local (Atlantic Canada) and contemporary.

anything else

  • have an idea that doesn’t fit into any of those categories? pitch it anyways.

finished work

  • double-spaced, times new roman, 12 point font.
  • submissions should be no longer than 4,000 words (but we love anything shorter, too).

have something that does not fit neatly into one of these boundaries? contact us and ask.

other things to know:

  • we are primarily looking for emerging artists based in Atlantic Canada. however, we are still accepting submissions from elsewhere.
  • simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please be an upstanding citizen and let us know if someone else snatched up your piece before we could.
  • we only accept one submission per person at a time, which can be made up of any combination of visual art, literary art, and/or pitches. send us your poetry, prose, visual art, pitches, and comics (but we’d love it if you sent it all at once)
  • USE OF AI WILL RESULT IN CAPITAL PUNISHMENT!!! (just kidding, but we don’t want any of your chatbot garble)
  • toothcut does not have a submission fee! huzzah!
  • that being said, we can’t pay you for your work just yet… but we’re working to change that.
