to cut one’s teeth:

  • learn early what most people learn late, just for the sake of it
  • try something new for the very first time (scared shitless or otherwise)
  • emerge from a gummy pink mess into open air
  • drink up your life in gulps, then spit it wherever you can

toothcut’s philosophy

cut your teeth.

we believe in the beauty of starting out. that is to say, we embrace the messy, the passionate, the learning, and the doing-their-bests. toothcut aims to prioritize emerging writers, especially BIPOC and queer voices from Atlantic Canada. give us your weirdness, your experimental prose, your comics and secrets. we will respond in kind with timely emails, song recommendations, and copy edits.

Caleb J. Browne (they/them) editor-in-chief

Caleb J. Browne (they/them) should’ve been a fisherperson by birthright, but because of the cod moratorium (and the fact that they lack the constitution for rough waters), they are a writer. They were born in Newfoundland and Labrador and raised throughout the Newfie-diaspora.

Jenna James (she/her) managing editor / secret keeper

Jenna James (she/her) is a writer and a serial hobbyist. A graduate of Sheridan College’s Creative Writing & Publishing program, Jenna’s stories and reviews have previously been published in B222, The Ampersand Review and Intermission Magazine. Originally from Ktaqmkuk (Newfoundland), Jenna is currently completing her Masters of English at the University of New Brunswick.

Tanner Hudson (he/him) editor / mascot

Unfortunately, Tanner Hudson (he/him) is a writer and editor from Conception Bay South. He discovered his unrequited love with writing in Junior High and has since gone on to doing his Honours in English Literature at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. When not daydreaming about questions nobody ever wants the answers to, Tanner can be found acting like a fool on stage or telling dad jokes to his unamused dog.

Nick Corcoran (he/him) editor / obituary writer

Nick Corcoran (he/him) is a playwright, songwriter, and theatre technician based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Luca Jesse Apel (they/them) treasurer

Luca Jesse Apel is a poet, a wood carver, a lifelong nomad, and a kid from Missouri still catching crayfish. His published work can be found in Antilang and Horseshoe magazines, and his visual art has been exhibited across British Columbia, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia. Outside of writing and art, Luca hikes the occasional mountain and takes frequent naps.
